postheadericon What if I barf up my ambien ?

I don’t see the doc for 2 weeks and I only have 7 ambien left…I have insomnia realy bad and I threw up my pill after about 15 minutes of taking it…Should I go ahead and take another one, or is it already in my system ? I need to be up and ready to go in about 4 hours….Help ?

Answer:

No, dont take another because it won’t be out of your system in 4 hours for you to be wide and awake. Plus, 15 min is enough time for the pill to be digested a bit. Try and get some rest and take your dose tomorrow.

postheadericon I’ve been on Ambien 10mg for a month it isn’t working! Are there any other sleeping pills that might work?

I dont think my insurance will pay for lunesta because it doesn’t have a generic. And I don;t want psychological drugs to sleep. I was on Remeron because it’s side effect was sleepiness but it makes you gain weight ahd I don’t a psych drug just to sleep? Any suggestions. Any pills work for you?

Answer:

If you cannot afford Lunesta, then you may ask your doctor about Trazadone. It is an old medication and when used in low doses can be a great sleep aid.

If not, then maybe you could ask about a benzo type drug, such as Xanax or Valium, although I would suggest the Trazadone first.

Also it appears that Lunesta will not be up for its patent exp until 2012 at the earliest, so you will need to go the Trazadone or other med route for awhile. This issue with sleep aids is that your body builds up tolerance to them, so the idea is that you switch back and forth…once you build up tolerance on one compound you switch to another and can start over again at a lower dose, then once you build up tolerance to that one, you can typically go back to the previous one and start at the bottom dosages again, and then keep rotating.

And for the record there are many people who suffer from sleep issues, so do not feel bad. There are many different factors that can lead to sleep disorders, and of course it is always best to try to get to the root cause to your problem and if at all possible to avoid the use of a drug compound to solve it for you. However this is just not as simple as it sounds and any many cases patients sleep cycles have become so disrupted and so thrown off that there is really not much choice but to put them on some type of drug to try to reboot the sleep rythm. So do not feel bad about it, but also do try to continue to work on figuring out the root cause to the problem, as in the end if you can do that, then it could be the best thing for you, as it may be something that can be actually fixed thus eliminating your need for any medications.

EDIT: I have seen many patients who respond extremley well to the use of Trazadone off label for sleep disorders, and the response lasted for much longer than a few weeks. In fact I know of several patients right off the top of my head that have been taking Trazadone for sleep disorder for more than 5 years and are still getting plenty of systemic effects from the drug. I did say that you could try a benzo, BUT, I suggest the Trazadone first. The cumulative drawbacks to being put on a benzo as a treatment for sleep disorder far outweigh those of a low dose anti-depressant like Trazadone. The last thing you want to do is to gain a mental and physical dependency to a drug, and if you go the benzo route that is going to happen, if you try the Trazadone route first and it works well for you, then your chances of developing physical and mental dependency is going to far less and far less severe than with a benzo or a sedative hypnotic for that matter. Also, Trazadone is cheap, has been on the market for a long time, so why not try the more cost effective drug with which we have more data on than the other way around. And FYI, Halcion is really a last resort….you get on that and build up a tolerance and it may take haldol to take you down after that!

postheadericon Does anyone else out there have a dependancy to Ambien?

Please email me with any comments you have about the drug.. Thanks.

Answer:

it tends to have an amnesia affect on some people. if you take too much, you can get clumsy and forget stuff. i had a room mate that took 8 ambien. i made him go to the ER and he didnt remember any of it…..almost like a blackout.
I have taken it (responsibly). But it did make me clumsy and black out, so i dont take it any more. that stuff scares me!
that’s all i know about ambien, i dont personally know about dependency issues.

postheadericon Is taking ambien like being high?

I’m on my prescribed ambien right now, and when i take it I get this feeling. I dont know how to describe it. Ive never smoked weed before but is this what it feels like? How do you feel when you take your ambien?

Answer:

postheadericon A little red wine before bed? When I am taking half an ambien (sleeping pill)? Seem ok?

I dont want to take a whold ambien becuase I dont want a dependency. I should say I am on chemotherapy drugs as well which administer steroids to keep the nausea down. I figure the ambien had a greater chance of having a depencendy than red wine. What do you think? Age 53, male, light drinker.

Answer:

sounds good to me. just keep it to under a bottle. and no… it wont kill you.

also, with only half an ambien, expect your sleeping pill to wear off sooner as it is a time release thing. with half the pill and you opening it up, you may find yourself wide awake 3 hours before you want to be.

move to cali, smoke a bowl (helps with the nausea and wont keep you up… and its legal here), drink a glass of wine… and nothing but the best of wishes in your fight.

postheadericon Can you smoke fiorinal, papaverine, or ambien and get the same high?

Would smoking the powder from these pills give the same high as swallowing them? If so, which ones? And dont rage on how drugs are bad. I just want to know the answer. thanks.

Answer:

No. These drugs when burned and vaporized will not produce the same effect as ingested. In fact it would probably kill you due to the poisons created by burning them.

postheadericon Is anyone taking ambien, or taken it in the past?

How would you rate how it works on a 1 to 10? How long have you been taking it or taken it in the past? I have terrible trouble sleeping and I dont want to become hooked on ambien but it works for me.

Answer:

Definately 10. I had been prescribed trazedone (an antidepressant which has a side effect of tiredness) to try to help my insomnia. I woke up with a “sleep hangover” which would last until noon. With Ambien, I have no problems sleeping, and awake with no aftereffects. The jury is still out as to the dependency on the drug. All the descriptions from the momographs for sleeping pills say they all have the potential to be habit forming. Just remeber if you do stop, you might get rebound amnesia for a few days.

Good Luck
